JKIA Workers Down Tools Over Adani Takeover Leading To Long Queues, Delayed Flights

On Tuesday night, long lines formed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as aviation workers formally downed tools.

The strike follows a notice issued by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) on August 12, 2024, opposing the proposed lease of Kenya’s flagship airport, JKIA, to Indian conglomerate Adani Group.

In the strike notice, KAWU Secretary General Moss Ndiema expressed concerns that the JKIA-Adani deal would result in mass layoffs, the introduction of foreign workers, and subpar working conditions.

The aviation workers also demanded the resignation of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Board of Directors and three senior managers, accusing them of incompetence and mismanagement.

They also demanded the resignation of two Kenya Airways security managers, alleging gross misconduct.

This includes claims of human trafficking, sexual harassment, and unfair promotions within the department.

Despite the union’s demands, Kenya Airways and KAA have provided no significant response. As a result, Tuesday night’s industrial action disrupted flight schedules, leaving many passengers stranded at the airport.

KAWU has stated that they will only reconsider the strike if the proposed sale of JKIA is completely abandoned, and if the KAA board and managers, as well as the two KQ managers, resign as requested.
