Protests In Trans Nzoia Termination Of 600 Workers’ Contracts
Over 600 casual workers in Trans Nzoia County took to the streets after their contracts were terminated without due process.
The workers who stormed the county headquarters claimed that their contracts had been terminated, despite the fact that some had been with the county for more than 20 years. All aspects of the Trans Nzoia County Government were impacted.
They claimed that the County, through its governor, George Natembeya, planned to hire private cleaners to replace them in the Health Department.
They also claimed that the governor already has a private cleaning company registered, which they said is about to take over.
“Because the Trans Nzoia County Government through Governor Natembeya wants to replace us with private Health cleaners, we will not accept,” one worker stated.
“He already has people and a registered cleaning company that will be taking over. We do not agree with that company and the plan,” another lamented.

According to the striking workers, the county’s Health Ministry did not issue termination letters to the group but instead fired them by word of mouth.
As a result, the workers blamed their troubles on the county’s Governor and Chief Officer of Health.
They now want the county government to reinstate them to their workstations and confirm their permanent and pensionable status.
The county government workers, led by workers’ union chair Samwel Kiboi, have vowed to initiate an impeachment process against the county secretary.
They claimed that the head of the public service was interfering with the smooth operation of the public services.
All eyes are now on Governor Natembeya, who during his campaign promised Trans Nzoia residents equity in the county jobs and development.
