The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Kakamega County’s head of cleaning services for allegedly acquiring wealth worth Ksh615 million through corrupt means.

The individual is suspected of acquiring wealth through public theft and misappropriation of funds.

On Sunday, September 29, the EACC announced that it had launched thorough investigations into public officers who had obtained wealth through questionable means.

The individual owns a private school, land, vehicles, and other high-end properties, totaling hundreds of millions of dollars in unexplained wealth.

Additionally, the suspect owns several restaurants and residential buildings in Kakamega County. It was revealed that the private school is worth Ksh220 million and run by the wife of the suspect.

According to the EACC’s preliminary investigations, the suspect owns six high-end vehicles and numerous prime parcels of land throughout the country.

The commission is looking for the Ksh615 million wealth that the individual has amassed through questionable means. The suspect’s wealth is insufficient to cover his county salary.

As part of the investigation, EACC conducted raids on the suspect’s and other county officials’ homes and offices, seizing key documents and cash.

The Commission believes the suspect’s wealth was derived from kickbacks from suppliers and contractors while he worked in the procurement department before being transferred to his current position as head of cleaning in Kakamega County.

During the probe, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi stated that the arrest and search of the head of Kakamega County cleaning services was part of an ongoing investigation into suspected corruption proceeds.

Following his arrest, the suspect was taken to the EACC Bungoma Regional Offices, where he provided a statement.

“The Commission took up the matter upon receipt of complaints that the official had accumulated unexplained wealth worth millions of shillings through kickbacks that the Commission reasonably believes he received from suppliers and contractors when he served in the Procurement Department before he was moved to his current Department,” read part of the EACC statement.
