Buku previously held senior editorial positions in the private sector, including Managing Editor at the Standard Group and Sub-Editor at the Nation Media Group.
His career began in education, where he taught at several high schools in Kenya from 1990 to 1997 before moving on to media and communications.
He joined the Nation Media Group in October 1998 and worked there for three years before leaving in 2003 to join the Standard Media Group.
Buku served as Managing Editor of Standard’s weekend editions.
After six years at Standard Group, Buku was appointed as Director of Communications at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, where he worked for two years before quitting for a top State House job.
He was appointed Senior Director of Public Communications at the President’s Office in 2013, where he worked for seven years before stepping down in 2022.

Buku has a postgraduate diploma in mass communication from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Education (Arts) from Kenyatta University.
This comes after President William Ruto complained in a July televised interview that his communications team had failed as a result of communication errors in the finance bill.
According to the Head of State, his communication team failed to counter misinformation about the legislation, including proposals that did not appear in the document.
“We did not explain ourselves better. I am sure my commutation team failed and that we did not have a proper communication architecture,” President Ruto told the press during an interview with journalists at State House.
