On Thursday, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale directed the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the Nairobi County Government to deal with those responsible for polluting the Nairobi River.

Speaking at the Nairobi Arboretum while leading Kenyans in commemorating Mazingira Day, the outspoken minister directed NEMA officials to ensure no more garbage dumping in the Nairobi water stream.

As a result, he directed Authority officials to question garbage collectors about where they dumped their waste.

CS Duale also warned companies that dump waste into the Nairobi River, stating that any company found to be responsible for polluting the main river would face severe consequences.

According to Duale, most households in Nairobi City lacked sewer tanks, which he claimed contributed significantly to the pollution of the Nairobi River.

Meanwhile, the tree planting initiative is consistent with Kenya’s overall environmental strategy, which includes afforestation, reforestation, and the protection of water catchment areas.

The tree planting exercise is part of President William Ruto’s Green Kenya Initiative, which aims to restore the country’s ecosystems and mitigate the negative effects of climate change.
