Deputy President’s Office Addresses Viral Gachagua Resignation Letter
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has not resigned, despite the widespread distribution of a forged resignation letter.
A document falsely claiming that Gachagua resigned has circulated online, but the Deputy President remains in office as he faces impeachment proceedings in Parliament.
Reliable sources within the offices of both President William Ruto and the Deputy President have confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that the resignation rumours are completely false.
The letter, addressed to “The People of Kenya,” stated that Gachagua would step down “effective immediately,” citing personal reasons and concerns about his impending impeachment.
It read in part, “I believe it is in the best interest of both my conscience and the people I serve.”

The document, however, was discredited for lacking the Deputy President’s official signature and the necessary stamps of his office.
Gachagua’s team clarified that any resignation must be formally submitted to Kenya’s President, along with the appropriate signatures and seals.
The fake letter circulating online does not meet these criteria, and those close to the Deputy President maintain that he was determined to challenge the impeachment proceedings.

If Gachagua’s impeachment is upheld, whether by the Senate or the courts, he will lose significant retirement benefits under the Retirement Benefits Act.
These perks include a pension equal to 80% of his last salary, as well as other benefits like security and medical insurance.
However, the Act states that officials found guilty of gross misconduct or violations of the Constitution will lose their benefits.
On the other hand, if Gachagua had chosen to resign voluntarily before being impeached, he would have received a lump sum equal to 12 months of his last salary, diplomatic passports, and additional benefits for himself and his spouse.
