Machakos Governor Threatens Not To Pay Striking Doctors

Striking physicians in Machakos County will not be paid unless they agree to return to work, Governor Wavinya Ndeti has announced.

Ndeti stated that the courts had declared the strike illegal and that the government would not pay the medics who violated the law.

Ndeti stated that her government had satisfied all of the striking physicians’ demands except one regarding salary increases, which she said was not tenable under the current conditions.

The Governor spoke on Tuesday, the second day of her development tour of the Mwala Sub-county.

Ndeti, who spoke primarily in the local dialect, said it was not now possible to boost the salary of doctors because workers in other departments had not received an increment.

Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi reported that 422 healthcare personnel in the county have been promoted since Governor Ndeti took office.

Mwangangi believes it would be unjust for the county administration to continue elevating only a subset of employees.

The deputy governor claimed that the national government’s shared money to counties was insufficient to cover pay increases.

He also urged Members of Parliament to strive for an increase above the existing Sh380 billion.

Justus Kasiva, Chief Officer of Medical Services, stated that nurses and clinical officers had returned to work, but doctors remained resolute.

He stated that they had not paid the striking doctors this month and would not do so if they continued to strike.

The county government recently provided equipment for the hospital.

Residents were pleased with the new facility, which will save them from having to travel to Machakos for X-ray and ultrasound services.

The governor also started a county spatial planning programme for all main towns at Kabaa market in a step that will secure the properties of inhabitants in the towns as their plots will be provided with title deeds.
