Employee Torture Forces MPs Probe Into Auditor General’s Office
The National Assembly Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunities has requested a probe into alleged corruption in the office of Auditor General Nancy Gathungu.
In a meeting on Tuesday, November 19, the committee demanded an investigation to determine whether allegations of abuse of office, corruption, tribalism, favoritism, and mismanagement in Gathungu’s office were accurate.
The claims were made by a group of Auditor General’s office employees who drafted a petition to the legislative committee condemning alleged illegalities in that office.
Employees at Gathungu’s office who requested anonymity claimed that corruption, abuse of office, tribalism, favoritism in training, and a hostile environment were common.
They also stated that some of them were subjected to physical and mental torture, which impeded their ability to provide good services.
“Over 200 staff members allegedly possess fake qualifications, including Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificates and no action has been taken against them,” claimed one of the employees in the Auditor General’s office.
During the session, headed by Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were, the parliamentarians observed that the staff’s charges were serious and required immediate inquiry.
It was indicated that the petitions would be brought to the National Assembly’s Public Petitions Committee for comprehensive review and additional investigation by appropriate agencies.

The committee reaffirmed that such petitions were filed with the Petitions Committee, but advised employees to identify themselves first because the investigation could not be performed based on charges made by anonymous employees.
“The law is very clear. Petitions or complaints delivered to the National Assembly must contain details of the authors such as names and signatures among others,” said Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge.
Meanwhile, Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan alleged that the happenings in the Auditor General’s office were caused by internal wrangles brought by the change of leadership.
“The Committee needs to be careful while handling the matter. We should be objective and professional to avoid taking a direction that might amount to undermining the office,” MP Hassan commented.
