Gachagua Hints At A Major Political Announcement In January

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said on Sunday, November 24, that he will make his next political move following his impeachment.

Speaking at a church service at AIPCA Kangari in Murang’a County, Gachagua said that he will formally announce his next political move in January of next year.

According to Gachagua, the region studied President William Ruto’s political playbook after he supported impeachment calls, implying that his declaration will shake up the environment in Mt Kenya.

“This January, I will tell you what we have agreed and it is good that I have said that my friend the President did well in bringing on this political fight with the people of the mountain as we have now known him,” Gachagua revealed.

“Next year, the political movement that will come out of Mt Kenya region will make the 2002 movement look like a joke,” he added.

The former DP also indicated that he was actively involved in engagement meetings with key players in the region about his next political moves.

Gachagua stated these while praising the Members of Parliament from Mount Kenya who supported him during the impeachment process.

According to Gachagua, the MPs behaved in the best interests of the entire Mt Kenya region by refusing to be coerced into political battles.

“We are talking with our church leaders, business people, professionals, and all the brained leaders who love our people,” Gachagua stated.

Gachagua’s expected declaration is likely to set the tone for the upcoming general elections after he previously threatened a severe political war with Ruto.

“We have read and understood the President and we now want to promise him that our engagements will be structured in a way going forward because we initially talked to you when you had a bible and we did not understand you well then,” he stated.

Kenyans and political observers will be waiting for Gachagua’s announcement, especially because he is unlikely to run for president after being impeached.

However, the Constitution is silent on the destiny of an impeached leader, namely whether they can be prevented from standing for office.

However, in May 2021, the Court of Appeal issued a decision stemming from Governor Ferdinand Waititu of Kiambu County’s impeachment in January 2020.

The court also ruled that the law did not automatically prevent citizens from standing for office in such situations.

The Appellate Court instead concluded that impeached individuals could only be prohibited from running if there were moral and legal grounds for their impeachment.
