Criminal Group Attacks 3 Police Officers With Suspected Acid In Nairobi

On Monday, November 25, three police officers were critically injured as a result of a suspected acid attack by a criminal group at a medical centre in Ngara, Nairobi.

The incident occurred while officers were pursuing a suspect who had fled from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to a health clinic.

When the suspect arrived at the medical facility, he hurriedly entered the room and shut the door from within. The police officers’ attempts to obtain admission into the room proved abortive.

During the argument, a 45-year-old lady emerged and splashed the officers with a substance believed to be acid.

Agitated by the occurrence, members of the public immediately notified officials from the Ngara Police Station, who hurried to the scene.

The officers discovered their colleagues lying on the ground with injuries. Two male cops suffered burns to their faces, hands, and legs, while one female officer suffered burns to her face, hands, and chest.

Following the incident, the cops were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital, where they were admitted and treated before being discharged in fair condition.

Meanwhile, police initiated an investigation, during which five people were arrested and five litres of suspected sulphuric acid and various narcotics were recovered and held as evidence.

The Ngara incident comes amid a spike in police attacks by criminal gangs, particularly in Nairobi’s suburbs, where criminal groups control illicit industries.

A similar event occurred four months ago in Murang’a County when a police officer was attacked and injured by a group of unruly adolescents.

The officer was part of a group that had recently finished a recruitment exercise in the Kenol neighborhood of Thika, Kiambu County. According to a witness, the officer was hurt when the youngsters started throwing stones at a police car transporting policemen from the recruitment drive.

While recounting the incident, the witness stated that the mob damaged the vehicle’s windscreen before throwing more stones on the seat where the office was sitting.

The accused, numbering around ten, fled the area shortly after attacking the officers.

The injured officer was transported to a medical center in Thika, where he was treated before being released.

The other police officers in the same vehicle experienced soft tissue injuries but received first aid on the site before transporting their colleague to the hospital.
