Police Break Silence On Gachagua Attack, Hours After Dumping Abducted Ally

The National Police Service has refuted accusations that former Limuru Member of Parliament Peter Mwathi was arrested following yesterday’s incident during a funeral attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Limuru, Kiambu County.

On Friday, November 29, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja stated that police personnel did not arrest Mwathi as alleged since he is not a person of interest to police.

Kanja reported that Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) personnel in Limuru had begun investigations to determine the reason for the disturbance during the occasion and apprehend the offenders.

While commenting on the incident, Kanja urged Kenyans with information that could aid in the arrest of the culprits who invaded the funeral to contact the local police station.

The police chief was forced to clarify Mwathi’s purported arrest after a group of Gachagua supporters went to the DCI headquarters in Kiambu County to demand the former MP’s release.

Speaking to the press at DCI headquarters on Thursday, November 28, Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa claimed that Mwathi was kidnapped by unknown persons in a black Subaru.

“We came here at the DCI to demand a swift investigation of what transpired today where an attempt on the life of Rigathi Gachagua was carried out by hired goons by the government,” the Senator said.

“We also came here because we wanted to find the whereabouts of the former MP Peter Mwathi because he was abducted by men in Subaru,” Thang’wa added.

IG Kanja’s declaration came just hours after the DCI called Karungo Wa Thang’wa to shed light on the incident in which the former Deputy President was attacked by goons.
