Gov’t Releases Ksh965 Million For Medical Interns, Clinicians
The Ministry of Health stated in a statement on Saturday that the funds will be used to pay monthly stipends and accrued arrears for nursing officers, clinical officers, medical officers, and pharmacist interns.
According to the ministry, the total comprises Sh528 million in arrears payments and Sh110 million in monthly payments to nursing and clinical officers.
“A further payment of Sh326 million has been made as arrears payment for medical officers interns, dental officers interns and Pharmacist interns,” Health CS Deborah Barasa said.
“This 100 percent payment ensures that all posted interns in the specified cadres receive their dues without delay,” she said.
According to the ministry’s breakdown, the money will be used to pay 826 medical officers interns, 274 pharmacists, 71 dentists, 140 degree clinical officers, 1,185 degree nursing officers, and 1,251 diploma clinical officers.

This comes as doctors threaten to strike over the government’s refusal to implement the agreed-upon Collective Bargaining Agreement and a return-to-work formula inked earlier this year.
On Wednesday of this week, the doctors’ organization KMPDU urged intern doctors to leave their workstations immediately in protest of the government’s alleged refusal to pay their salary.

KMPDU Secretary General Devji Atellah stated that the interns have gone unpaid for the past four months, resulting in financial difficulties that have driven some of them to the verge.
He stated that the union has lost two intern doctors, primarily due to financial issues, the most recent being a pharmacist at Thika Level 5 Hospital.
Four others, he added, tried suicide but were rescued and hospitalized.
Atellah stated that doctors will meet at the Safari Park hotel on November 30 for a national delegates meeting with the sole purpose of launching a strike.
