“It’s Safe, Reliable!” – Kenya Railways Confirms On Nairobi-Nyahururu Train After Gachagua Remarks
Despite former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s complaints of safety problems, Kenya Railways says the Nairobi-Ol Kalou-Nyahururu train will continue to operate.
On Saturday, July 11, the company said that the train will continue to travel from Nairobi to Nyahururu every Tuesday and Friday, with return services on Wednesdays and Sundays.
“The train operates consistently from Nairobi to Nyahururu every Tuesday and Friday and makes a return trip every Wednesday and Sunday, offering a safe, reliable, efficient and affordable travel experience,” the agency said.
Kenya Railways also promised communities that it will continue to deliver agricultural products, construction materials, and other bulk cargo, thereby benefiting farmers, businesses, and regional trade.

“Kenya Railways also continues to facilitate the movement of freight, including fertiliser, agricultural produce, construction materials and other bulk cargo, driving economic growth along the corridor,” it added.
The organization stated that the line is projected to transport more than 5,000 tonnes of cargo and over 1,000 people per trip, with the goal of restoring the country’s metre-gauge railway network.
The latest update comes amid political controversy surrounding the railway line ahead of the July 16 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

Speaking on Friday, July 10, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader urged residents to avoid boarding the train, arguing that its reintroduction was politically motivated.
“They brought a fake train to Ol Kalou after 45 years of absence, and it knocked a few vehicles because there are no signs,” Gachagua said.
“I am asking the people of Ol Kalou to avoid that train. It is a disaster in the making.”
Gachagua claimed the railway had remained inactive for about 45 years and questioned the timing of its revival, suggesting it was intended to influence voters ahead of the by-election.
The Gilgil-Ol Kalou-Nyahururu railway line was officially reopened on June 2, 2026, ending nearly five decades of inactivity.
The 96-year-old metre-gauge line had remained dormant since the late 1970s after passenger and freight traffic shifted to road transport, with the reopening coming as a major relief for the residents.
