Nairobi Police Boss Bans Political Rallies in Ahead of Linda Mwananchi Rally
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud has announced a ban on large political rallies in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
This comes just hours ahead of the planned Linda Mwananchi rally on Sunday.
Speaking on Saturday, September 12, Mahamud said the police had received intelligence of a planned disruption to public order during the rally, warning that the rally would not take place at the CBD.
According to the police commander, it is not only the Linda Mwananchi rally that will be blocked in the CBD.
He said that any large political rally will not be allowed in the area, stating that the rallies are likely to disrupt the normal operations in the city centre.
“Resolution has been made that large political rallies will not be permitted, and will not allow to disrupt the normal function of the CBD,” Mahamud stated.
“CBD is a critical national commercial and public space.”
Further, police said that the area is a critical space that serves tourists, workers, businesses, and Kenyans at large, particularly on Saturday and Sunday, and will not allow any rally to disrupt their normal operations.
“We will not allow you, will not allow anybody to make a political rally there. We will deal with you properly,” he added.
Mahamud, however, reiterated that any political party has the freedom to hold a political rally.
However, the police are also required to ensure that public order, business continuity, movement and the rights of other citizens are protected.

“There are millions and millions of people who come to the CBD on Sunday, and the youth also,” the police commander added.
“With the regional security team, the committee has been informed that large political rallies will not be permitted and will not be allowed to disrupt the normal function of the CBD.”
The move suggests that in the future, for the 2027 General Elections, the CBD will not host any large political rallies, with the police stepping up efforts to maintain normal operations.
The directive comes hours ahead of the Linda Mwnanchi rally in Nairobi, with the movement expected to tour areas in Nairobi before a mega rally at the Jacaranda grounds.
According to Linda Mwananchi, they will hold a church service at the All Saints Cathedral along Kenyatta Avenue before proceeding to a rally in the city.
They are expected to visit Marikiti, Gikomba, Burma Market, Stage 17, B centre, Manyanja and Jogoo Road before a mega rally at the Jacaranda grounds.
