Man Arrested For Self-Kidnapping After Losing A Bet In Kitengela
On Friday, December 13, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations rescued a 25-year-old man from an alleged self-abduction in Kitengela.
According to the DCI, the individual abducted himself after losing his entire November income to betting.
Following his rescue, DCI discovered that the man had sliced his body after abducting himself and sought a Ksh100,000 ransom from his sister.
DCI showed that the man, with the assistance of an accomplice, intended to extort money from his sister. The kidnapping is alleged to have been reported to the Kajiado Police Station.
According to the testimony recorded on Thursday night, police officers were informed that the accused victim was shoved into a Toyota Probox by two guys who purported to offer him a ride.

However, the DCI Crime Research and Operations Directorate tracked down the suspected victim to Mutuku Lodgings in Kitengela.
Police discovered the man wrapped with a rope around his legs and arms, with a bloodied bandage across his lips to keep it shut.
According to the DCI, the guy was questioned by authorities following his rescue, but detectives discovered that the kidnapping was an extortion plot planned by the victim and his accomplice.
During the rescue, police officers recovered Ksh10,100 currency and the handset he was using to connect with his family.

“Also taken as exhibits were a scalpel blade and bandages he was using on the self-inflicted wound to create the impression that his kidnappers were ruthless and meant business,” read part of the statement from the DCI.
The individual has been arrested and is awaiting arraignment. This year, 57 occurrences of abduction and kidnapping were reported between June and November, amid a period of increased political turmoil and protests.
Betting is swiftly becoming an epidemic, with a high proportion of the population, particularly young people aged 16 to 25, engaging in various betting activities such as sports betting and online casino games.
According to reports, more than half of the population gambles, owing to the ease of access to betting platforms and the influence of aggressive marketing, such as endorsements by local celebrities.
