Mwengi Mutuse Reveals Ruto’s Role In The Gachagua Impeachment

Mwengi Mutuse, a Kibwezi West Member of Parliament, has revealed intriguing details about the dramatic impeachment motion against Rigathi Gachagua, which was the first successfully moved by a lawmaker in Kenyan history.

Mutuse, who etched his place in history following his move, recently revealed that President William Ruto was concerned about impeaching Gachagua.

At the height of political tensions in September and October 2024, Kenyans were perplexed as to why President Ruto remained silent amid an attack on Gachagua.

Some sections went so far as to accuse the Head of State of using his influence and allies in the House to depose Gachagua.

Mutuse, on the other hand, stated that he did not discuss the motion with the President, but did discover from Ruto’s camp that the President was dubious about whether impeachment was the best option to control former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

“We did not speak about the issue of moving the motion,” Mutuse said. “In fact, the indication we got from the initial days was the president was a bit careful. He was not sure whether it was the right move.”

Mutuse also explained how the impeachment motion came to be, claiming that it was brought forth by concerned Kenyans.

He stated that Kenyans were convinced that the country was headed in the wrong direction due to disagreements between President William Ruto and his deputy.

Mutuse, who also runs a legal practice in Kilimani, approached the majority and minority leaders, Kimani Ichung’wah and Junet Mohammed, who both supported the proposal.

He added, “They (Junet and Ichung’wah) asked me to give them something to look at. They looked at it and got interested. They helped me mobilise Members of parliament to support the motion.”

Mutuse then gathered a group of his lawyer pals and began conducting extensive research to develop a case against Gachagua, a process which he claims took at least one month.

The MP also detailed attempts by Gachagua’s side to pressure him into revoking the motion, but he had already made up his mind.

However, Mutuse confirmed that the former DP never contacted him directly.

Mutuse was hailed as a hero on one side and a traitor on the other after a successful impeachment motion, with his security tightened following Gachagua’s removal.

Despite his quiet, Ruto commented for the first time about Gachagua’s impeachment in October, urging the nation to be unified while hinting that his former DP practiced ethnic politics.

While speaking at the Tobong’u Lore Turkana Festival, he emphasized that he will not tolerate tribal, divisive, or contemptuous politics in the country.

“We do not want tribal, divisive and dismissive politics. We want to come together as the people of Kenya.”
