The sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) will be held from February 26 to March 1, 2024, at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

UNEA-6 will be preceded by the sixth Open-ended Committee of Permanent Representatives, which will meet from February 19 to 23, 2024.

This year’s session, the sixth since the Assembly’s inception in 2014, will see countries consider 19 resolutions ranging from desertification to combating air pollution.

A delegation of the DPRK headed by Kim Kyong Jun, minister of Land and Environment Protection, left Pyongyang on February 22 to take part in the Sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Programme General Assembly to be held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The resolutions are part of a larger UNEA effort to accelerate the global campaign against the three planetary crises of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

“UNEA-6 will place particular focus on how stronger multilateralism can help us to do this,” said UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Inger Andersen earlier this month.

“It will drive united, inclusive and multilateral action that addresses every strand of the triple planetary crisis as one indivisible challenge.”

During five days of talks, government ministers, business leaders, scientists, and environmental activists from all over the world will seek solutions to the triple planetary crisis, including high-level discussions on financing and technology.

The UNEA will also dedicate a day to highlighting the importance of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), a collection of global environmental agreements.

According to observers, the true test of UNEA-6 will be whether it can build on previous successes and unite the world in a critical push against climate change, nature loss, and pollution.
