Football Teams That Have Won The Treble
Africas Now examines the definition of the term in the sport, as well as the teams that have done it.Â
For example, a team may be described as “still on for the treble” or as having “won the treble.”
What is a treble in football?
A treble in football is defined as a team winning three trophies. However, in order to be considered a true treble, they must be the ‘right’ trophies.
A domestic treble usually consists of the league, the main national cup, and the secondary national cup.
In England, for example, the domestic treble includes the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup (League Cup).
There is no such treble in Spain or Germany, but the Supercopa de Espana and DFL Supercup could potentially replace the League Cup, despite the fact that they are equivalent to the Community Shield.
The continental treble is very similar, but as the name suggests, it automatically includes a continental title, such as the Champions League.
A second-tier continental tournament, such as the Europa League, is acceptable when using the tag, but it comes with a caveat for many fans.
In general, a team is considered to have won a continental treble if they win their league, their main national cup competition, and the main continental competition.
Which teams have won a treble?
Teams that have won the treble form an exclusive group, which is understandable given how difficult it is to win three trophies in a single season.
AfricasNow has only focused on European teams below, but there are many more examples of treble-winning teams around the world.
