How to Apply for a Tourist Visa to Canada

Most tourists require a visiting visa to enter Canada. You may also require one if you are traveling via a Canadian airport on your way to your final destination.

A visiting visa (sometimes known as a temporary resident visa) is an official document that we place in your passport. It demonstrates that you meet the requirements to travel to Canada

How long can you stay?

Most tourists to Canada can stay for up to six months. At the point of entry, the border services officer may grant you permission to stay for less than or more than six months.

If this is the case, they will include the departure date in your passport. They may also offer you a paper known as a visitor record that shows the date you must leave.

If you do not receive a stamp on your passport, you may stay for 6 months from the date you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever occurs first. If you require a stamp, please contact a border services officer for one.

If you arrive at an airport that employs primary inspection kiosks, ask the border officer after you’ve finished using the kiosk.

Make sure you need a guest visa before applying.

You might need a visiting visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization.

The entry document required varies on the type of travel document:

i) The country issuing the document, and the nationality of the traveler.

ii) How you plan to get to Canada for this trip.

Who can obtain a visa?

To obtain a tourist visa, you must complete the following fundamental requirements:

II) Maintain good health.

V) Convince an immigration officer that you intend to leave Canada at the end of your visit.

VI) Bring adequate money for your stay.

The amount of money required depends on the length of your vacation and whether you will be staying in a hotel or with friends or family.

NOTE: You may also be required to have a medical exam and a letter of invitation from a Canadian resident.

Check the list of documents required for your specific circumstance. Certain people are not permitted to enter Canada.
