“We will push that …,” DP Gachagua Promises The One-Man One-Shilling Campaign For Mt Kenya.

On Sunday, May 12, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced that he would be spearheading the One-Man One-Shilling campaign concerning resource distribution.

Governor Cecily Mbarire of Embu had complained that despite having the largest population, the Mt. Kenya region, which includes Embu, receives less funds from the national government. Gachagua was replying to Mbarire.

Speaking at the consecration of Bishop John Kimani Nthiga at the ACK Cathedral of St. Peter’s Mbeere in Siakago, Embu County, were the two leaders.

Gachagua asserted that he was a staunch supporter of one man, one vote, one penny even if he had opposed the same formula during the previous administration.

“Resources are about people. The more you are, the more taxes you pay. And it goes without saying, the more taxes you pay, when it comes to sharing you share more,” he explained his rationale.

Gachagua noted that Mt Kenya received fewer funds while having more resource-intensive projects and requirements.

“We will push that and we have no apologies to make because it cannot be a constituency like Ruiru that has almost 800,000 people is given the same Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation as a constituency with 14,000 people,” he lamented.

Gachagua stated that it was unfair and that he would lead the battle to ensure fairness while sharing CDF resources.

“It is not because we come from a region that has a high population but because it is about fairness and resources are people,” he explained.

Furthermore, Gachagua stated that he would advocate for other Mt Kenya regions to be listed as recipients of the equalisation grant.

The grant is allocated to underserved countries to support infrastructure and other critical socioeconomic projects.

Governor Mbarire has previously claimed that Embu had not received equalisation money, despite the region being predominantly Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL).

Gachagua assured that this had already been taken into consideration, adding that additional constituencies in Mt Kenya would also be labeled marginalised in order to benefit from the fund.
