UDA MP Insists No Amount Of Threats Will Deter The Finance Bill Passing

Despite receiving calls and messages from Kenyans, Majority Chief Whip Silvanus Osoro remains confident that the Finance Bill will pass.

Despite humiliating text messages and calls from furious Kenyans, the South Mugirango Member of Parliament has maintained that most parliamentarians will not vote against the financial bill.

After receiving several calls on Thursday, the majority of parliamentarians turned their phones off or blocked all numbers.

The government-allied MPs had promised to pass the bill next week.

“We are not going to reject the finance bill, because we must fund government, but we are going to reject contentious clauses. Clauses about bread are debatable,” Osoro reiterated.

However, the MPs are willing to consider and, if necessary, change proposals that have sparked opposition.

The opposition had threatened to introduce amendments to the rejected proposal, including a bread excise tax and the now-infamous motor vehicle tax.

A group of MPs whose contact information has been made public have been inundated with messages and phone calls from Kenyans rallying against the bill.

Kenyans launched a social media campaign called #RejectFinanceBill2024 to urge MPs to drop the Bill in Parliament, citing unnecessary induced taxes that will plunge the country into another economic crisis.

The push was part of an online campaign aimed at forcing MPs to reject the bill before it is debated in the National Assembly next week.

Silvanus Osoro confirmed receiving over 3,000 messages and calls from Kenyans expressing dissatisfaction and frustration with the new taxes.

The campaign took place on the same day that Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u presented budget estimates for the new fiscal year 2024/2025.

The hotly debated Finance Bill is one of the government’s strategies for meeting its Ksh.3.9 trillion revenue target.
