DAP Is The Wrong Fertilizer – President Ruto
President William Ruto has revealed that he stopped using Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) due to soil acidity.
Ruto revealed at the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association Launch in Nairobi on Thursday that he stopped using DAP fertiliser on his farm five years ago.
He stated that farmers have long believed that DAP is the best fertiliser, despite research from the Ministry of Agriculture indicating otherwise.
“Many of you who come from farming areas you know DAP has been our fertiliser for the last 30 years, everybody believes Dap is the only fertiliser,” the President said.
“As a farmer myself I know DAP is the wrong fertiliser because it has made our soils acidic and I stopped using DAP almost five years ago because it is wrong,” he continued.
He stated that the decision on the type of fertiliser to provide to farmers through the subsidy programme was based on available research.
He stated that the Ministry of Agriculture was initially skeptical, as farmers had requested DAP or else they would not buy it.
Ruto insisted that the government will only buy NPK that is tailored to our soils and crops.
“Farmers made noise that the government had brought them fertiliser they don’t know that they won’t buy and have rejected, finally because it was subsidised the farmers bought the fertiliser,” he said.
“Six months into the story all the farmers were there taking selfies with maize because the maize is very nice,” he added.
Ruto stated that leadership is always about making the right decisions, not just the popular ones.
He requested that the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA) work with the government to improve the country’s agricultural situation.
