“I come here with a very deep heart and I speak on behalf of the people of Kenya. First I want to convey my condolences on behalf of the President of Kenya, His Excellency William Ruto,” stated Raila
As soon as the former Prime Minister took the podium, he was greeted with shouts and cheers before praising the late Chilima’s political stance.
Raila’s speech was cut short as cheers grew louder, particularly when he emphasized Chilima’s determination to ensure an equitable distribution of resources.
Raila also expressed his condolences, noting that Kenya had experienced a similar loss when the country lost the Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, in a plane crash.
Raila also advocated for African unity and fairness in accessing resources from Western countries.
“We are not asking for charity, we are asking for fairness in the international world markets. We want to see that Africans are able to add value to raw materials, and we are respected,” stated Raila.
He sympathized with Malawi after their traumatic experiences following a drought caused by climate change.
Raila also stated that he would advocate for African states to be compensated for the devastating effects of climate change, pointing out that Africans were bearing the brunt of events to which they had made only minor contributions.
The Azimio kingpin pushed for relaxed travel measures across the continent, claiming that the current visa system hampered African unity.
Chilima died on June 10 when a military aircraft carrying him and nine others crashed.
The entire crew and other passengers onboard, including former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri, also perished in the fatal crash.
