UDA MP Claims DP Gachagua To Blame For The Gen Z Nationwide Protests
Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa blamed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for Gen Z protesters’ invasion of parliament on June 25, 2024.
Speaking in Bungoma County on Saturday, Barasa stated that Gachagua’s continued talks about government shares had infuriated the youth, resulting in a breach at parliament, which killed several protesters and injured others.

“Maneno ya kuweka nchi kwa shares na kuleta ukabila, kwamba hii ndio sehemu iko na watu wengi ndio ipate maendeleo mengi, maneno kama hayo ndio ilifanya vijana wa Gen Z wakapandwa na mori wakakuja hadi kututafuta katika bunge la kitaifa,” Barasa said.
During the public address attended by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Barasa also criticised Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga.
The Kimilili MP claimed he was becoming Gachagua’s mouthpiece by advancing what he called divisive remarks.
Barasa, who was elected on a UDA party ticket, blamed Gachagua, adding to his difficulties in uniting the party’s elected leaders and Mount Kenya region leaders.
Barasa praised Ruto for working with opposition party politicians.
He stated that it was time for the Kenya Kwanza government to observe how ODM chairman John Mbadi would generate revenue without raising taxes.
On June 25, 2024, the opposition coalition party voted against the contentious Finance Bill 2024, with party leaders urging the government to look for other ways to generate revenue.
According to human rights organizations, at least 60 people were killed as a result of the subsequent protests across the country.
Key UDA party leaders have openly defied Gachagua’s calls for the one man, one shilling, one vote agenda, describing it as divisive.
Political analysts have recently noted that Gachagua is becoming increasingly alienated from the government as a result of President William Ruto’s agreement to collaborate with key opposition party leaders from ODM.
Ruto nominated Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi as CS Energy and Petroleum, Hassan Joho as CS Mining, ODM Chairman John Mbadi as CS Treasury and National Planning, and Wycliffe Oparanya as CS Cooperative.
This comes just two years after Gachagua told Ruto to leave the ODM party leader to him, fearing he would make an arrangement to join the Kenya Kwanza administration.
