Health CS Nominee Barasa Vows To Crush With Afya House Mafia – Can She?
Deborah Barasa, Health Cabinet Secretary nominee, wowed members of the Appointments Committee on Thursday during her vetting by explaining how she will deal with cartels at Afya House.
Responding to a question from National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Barasa stated that she possesses the strength and capability to ‘manage them’.
Speaker Moses Wetang’ula was quick to correct her by offering quick advice.

“You can’t manage them, you confront them,” advised Wetang’ula.
“That is what you have been asked, you eliminate them…Your colleague who came earlier said you neutralise them,” he said amidst laughter from the members.
In her submission, Barasa stated that she would prioritize prevention over treatment, particularly in procurement processes aimed at closing corruption loopholes.
“We can use a digital platform, open tenders and even independent bodies to monitor the tendering processes,” Barasa said.
In delivering her mandate, the nominee vowed to maintain professionalism and integrity.
Barasa was the second nominee to appear before the Committee on Appointments Committee.
The committee is led by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. Kindiki Kithure, the Interior CS nominee, was the first to appear in the morning.
The CS nominee also pledged to implement Universal Health Coverage (UHC) at the community level in order to ensure consistent access to healthcare.
“We can strengthen the processes and procedures that exist through adopting a digital platform, that way, we will reduce the human-to-human interaction,” CS Nominee Debra Barasa stated.
