Al-Shabaab Attack Leaves 32 People Dead Off Somali Beach

A suicide bomber and gunmen targeted a popular beachfront location in Somalia’s capital on Saturday, killing at least 32 people and injuring several others, according to a police spokesman.

According to Abdifatah Adan Hassan, approximately 63 people have been injured, with some critical.

Video footage captured a number of bodies and injured people in Mogadishu’s Abdiaziz district.

Local media reports that al-Shabab militants, who control much of southern and central Somalia, carried out the attack.

The group is affiliated with al-Qaeda and has waged a brutal insurgency against Somalia’s UN-backed government for nearly 20 years.

People were panicked, according to one eyewitness who spoke with AFP.

“It was hard to know what was happening because shooting started soon after the blast,” he stated.

According to Abdilatif Ali, some people tried to take cover on the ground while others fled the scene.

“I saw wounded people at the beachside. People were screaming in panic and it was hard to notice who was dead and who was still alive,” he added.

According to Mr Hasan, at least five people were responsible for the attack, one of whom blew himself up and three others were killed.

One attacker was apprehended alive, a police spokesman told reporters in Mogadishu.
