Prof Kiama Suspended, Margaret Jesang Replaces With Him As Acting VC Of University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi Council has announced the appointment of Prof. Margret Jesang Hutchinson as acting Vice-Chancellor.

In a communication to the University Community, the council stated that Jesang, who was previously the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research Innovation and Enterprise (RIE), would take on the new role for three months.

“The Council of the University of Nairobi led by its Chair Prof. Amukowa Anangwe today witnessed the taking over of office by the Ag Vice Chancellor Margret Hutchinson.

“Hutchinson was appointed to the position of Ag VC on Friday, August 2, 2024, following the suspension of Stephen Kiama Gitahi,” the University said.

“That the  Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama Gitahi, has been suspended from office for a period of(3) three months pending conclusion of disciplinary process effective Friday, 2nd August 2024,” the council communicated.

As part of the new changes, Prof Ayub Njoroge Gitau was appointed as acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs (AA).

Kiama and the council have been pushing and pulling for these changes for quite some time.

The council had sent the embattled Vice Chancellor on compulsory leave several times.

However, an adamant Kiama made his way back to the institution’s top seat despite facing much opposition.

Francis Mulaa, former Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, will serve as the acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Enterprise.

Kiama was appointed VC in 2020, succeeding Peter Mbithi.
