‘You Cannot Be The Incumbent And Opposition’ – Wamalwa To Raila As He Hints At Azimio Coalition Exit
Eugene Wamalwa, the leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), has hinted that his party will leave the Azimio coalition.
This comes after coalition members, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), agreed to collaborate with President William Ruto’s administration.
According to Wamalwa, it is impossible to be both in government and in opposition.

“You cannot be the incumbent and opposition… this is where we have reached and we are in the process of seeing whether we can resolve this issue or divorce,” he said on Spice FM.
The former Defence CS noted that other parties in the Azimio coalition have already issued exit notices, and his party could do the same very soon.
The parties are Narc Kenya and the Party of National Unity (PNU).
Wamalwa insisted that Azimio as a coalition had lost direction, claiming that the opposition outfit had also sinned against Kenyans.

“Martha Karua was here he has given notice, Peter Munya was here he has also given notice. Very soon Eugene and DAP will give notice. I can tell you as Azimio we have lost direction.
“We have sinned against the people of Kenya and fallen short of the glory but we are doing something about it and very soon you will hear from us,” he added.
The DAP-K leader stated that it was time for the coalition partners to part ways.
He also described ODM’s decision to collaborate with the government as a betrayal of the highest order.
“For us Azimio to go into bed with William Ruto is betrayal of the highest order and this is why as we sit here today, in Azimio, we have reached a point of divorce,” Wamalwa said.
“In a marriage when grounds for divorce arise, one of those is when you have irreconcilable differences.”
His remarks came after Narc Kenya, led by Martha Karua, announced its withdrawal from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.
Asha Bashir, the acting secretary general of Narc Kenya, communicated the decision in a letter to coalition secretary-general Junet Mohammed.
“Kindly take note that our stay in Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition is not tenable due to the prevailing political developments,” she said.
“As NARC Kenya by way of this letter, we are giving notice to exit the Coalition as stipulated in the exit clause (s) in the Coalition Agreement. This notice is effective from the date of this letter,” she added.
The Party of National Unity (PNU) had also announced its decision to leave the Azimio coalition.
Party leader Peter Munya announced that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) would meet to decide whether it would remain in the coalition.
He stated that the Raila Odinga-led party cannot be in government while remaining in opposition, so they must disassociate.
“They (ODM) have said they want to be in the government and for some of us who want to be in the opposition, we must bolt out so that we can continue fighting for the people of Kenya,” he said.
“The way our constitution is structured is such that there have to be two sides, there are people in government and people supposed to be in the opposition, you cannot be in both places,” he said.
He also challenged Raila and other coalition partners to declare whether they are still in opposition or have joined the government side.
