5 Police Officers Who Freed Kenya’s Notorious Serial Killer Released On A Ksh200,000 Bond

Despite serious allegations that they helped a notorious serial killer and a group of detainees escape, five police officers from the Gigiri Police Station were released on a personal bond of Ksh200,000 each.

The dramatic events occurred on Monday, August 20, when Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, a suspect in the murders of 42 women, and 12 other suspects escaped from custody.

The officers were arraigned on Wednesday, and the court issued its decision on Thursday, August 22.

The police had requested a 14-day detention to investigate whether the officers were involved in the escape of the 13 detainees.

State prosecutor James Gachoka and the police argued that the investigation was still ongoing and that the officers should be held in custody to allow for a thorough probe.

However, Magistrate Martha Naanzushi determined that the five officers could be released on a personal bond.

They have been ordered to report to the investigating officer twice a week while the investigation is ongoing.

Collins Jumaisi’s escape, after confessing to a horrific string of murders dating back to 2022, including that of his wife, has sent shockwaves throughout Nairobi.

Jumaisi and the 12 Eritreans reportedly escaped from the Gigiri Police Station via a cut wire mesh over a window.

The jailbreak was discovered around 5:00 a.m. on Monday, resulting in an immediate manhunt.

According to Officer Benedict Kaulu, who is leading the investigation, statements from more than five witnesses are still pending.

The officers’ mobile phones have been sent to the cybercrime unit for forensic analysis, and the station’s CCTV footage is also being reviewed.

Prosecutors are concerned that insiders within the police force may have helped facilitate the escape.

The detained officers were on duty at the time of the escape, which raised suspicions of internal complicity.

There are concerns that the officers’ release will impede the investigation, as they are suspected of playing a role in the escape.

On Thursday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intensified efforts to rearrest Jumaisi, offering a significant reward for any information leading to his arrest.

The daring jailbreak on Monday sparked outrage and suspicion, and authorities are now investigating what appears to be an inside job.

The daring escape in the early hours of Monday has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the police officers stationed at Gigiri.

According to new information, Jumaisi, a man accused of murdering 42 women, and his co-escapees walked out of the precinct’s main door rather than fleeing under cover of darkness.

This occurred under the watchful gaze of two police officers on night shift duty, who, according to eyewitnesses, may have been complicit in the escape.

The DCI has now offered a significant cash reward for any information that leads to Jumaisi’s re-arrest.

“A significant cash reward will be provided to anyone with credible information leading to the suspect’s arrest,” the agency stated in a notice published in the Daily Nation on Thursday, August 22.
