MOMBASA: Moi International Airport Operations Halted As Workers Stage Demos

On Tuesday, operations at Mombasa’s Moi International Airport came to a halt after a group of airport workers staged a demonstration inside the facility.

Passengers were forced to wait longer, despite security officers’ efforts to restore order at Kenya’s second-largest airport.

In the videos posted online, a group of airport workers were seen mobilising their colleagues and vowing to protest until their demands were met.

In addition, travelers were seen patiently lining up along the security checkpoint, waiting for authentication before continuing their journey.

A passenger who spoke to the press revealed that his flight had been delayed for about one and a half hours after the aviation workers resorted to staging the demonstrations.

According to the traveller, despite the demonstrations, airport management promised to address the delays as soon as possible.

“My flight was to leave Mombasa at 9.30 am but I have been here for roughly one and a half hours. I have been waiting but I am hopeful I will be able to travel to Nairobi,” narrated one of the passengers.

“One of the officers passed by and told us that there were some delays but they anticipated it should be resolved soon.”

The latest developments at Moi Airport in Mombasa follow hours of protests at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Aviation workers at JKIA went on strike in protest of the government’s decision to lease the country’s main airport to Adani, an Indian company.

During the protests, airport employees demanded that the deal be scrapped immediately because it threatened their jobs.

The Kenya Airport Workers Union (KAWU) announced on Tuesday evening that they would hold a major demonstration beginning Wednesday in response to failed talks with the government.
