Mombasa Road To Experience A 33-Day Traffic Disruption – KENHA

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has notified Kenyans of a potential traffic disruption due to an upcoming road reconstruction.

The authority issued a notice on Friday informing road users that the traffic disruption would occur along a section of the Mombasa Road near Syokimau Railway Station.

Kenyans using the Mombasa Road will face traffic disruptions along the Nairobi-bound lanes for a month, from Friday, September 20 to Tuesday, October 22.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) near Syokimau Railway Station will experience traffic disruption along the Nairobi-bound lanes from Friday, September 20, 2024, to Tuesday, October 22, 2024,” part of the statement read.

In an official statement, KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndung’u urged road users to use the alternatives proposed by the authority and cooperate with police and traffic officers on the scene.

“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan below and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the notice added.

During the one-month traffic disruption, the Highway Authority will build a mid-span footbridge foundation in the median between the Nairobi-bound lanes and the adjacent Nairobi Expressway fence.

“This is to allow for realignment of the road and construction of a mid-span footbridge foundation at the median between the Nairobi bound lanes and the adjacent Nairobi Expressway fence,” the statement concluded.

This notice comes seven days after KeNHA announced the closure of 12 roads in Nairobi to make way for the Nairobi City Marathon competition.

The Nairobi Southern Bypass was temporarily closed, as was the Nairobi Expressway between James Gichuru Road and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) entrance.

Other roads that were closed included Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road, Langata Road, Harry Thuku Road, University Way, Koinange Street, Tata Road, Wakiihuri, and Bunyala Road.

The government has promoted the construction of more footbridges to reduce pedestrian accidents on major highways.

In 2023, three footbridges were constructed: one at the Hilton Inn Hotel near the Syokimau SGR terminus, another at the Airtel Building near the Southern Bypass interchange, and another near the Katani station.

The three footbridges cost Ksh 1.2 billion.
