Another Athlete Collapses, Dies At A Hotel In Elgeyo Marakwet
Kenya’s athletics community has suffered another setback after a runner collapsed and died on Monday while sipping black tea at a hotel in Elgeyo Marakwet.
Willy Chelewa, an athlete, collapsed just days after signing a Chinese sponsorship deal for international races.
According to reliable sources, the twenty-year-old athlete used the hotel room as a base while training with colleagues in the area, which has numerous training camps.
Following the athlete’s death, management notified authorities, who arrived on the scene.
Peter Mulinge, the area police commander, confirmed that the athlete died after drinking black tea and rice at a Kaptagat hotel.
Police have since launched an investigation and camped at the hotel to determine the cause of the athlete’s death.
They also collected samples of his food to determine the cause of the promising athlete’s death.
The athletic community and the runner’s family have since gone into mourning, with calls for thorough investigations.

Chelewa recently competed in the Nairobi City Marathon half-marathon, finishing in position 67.
His death occurs just a week after Rebecca Cheptegei, who was doused in gasoline by his fiancée over domestic issues.
The trend of athletes dying in mysterious circumstances is concerning and calls into question their safety.
