Police Brutalise Students At Kabete Polytechnic After Protest Broke Out Over Increased Fees

Traffic was temporarily disrupted along Waiyaki Way as Kabete National Polytechnic students protested.

Tens of irate students took to the streets on Tuesday, September 17, to protest an apparent increase in school fees.

Images and videos posted on X showed students protesting near the Kabete Police Station, while others blocked a section of the busy Waiyaki Way.

Small fires were lit outside the institution next to the road as students disrupted normal learning.

Some students claimed that one of the reasons they were protesting was that the institution planned to charge a high examination fee in addition to the standard tuition fee.

Police from the nearby Kabete Police Station were dispatched to control the situation, and they could be seen clearing rocks set up by the protesters from the road.

This was the second wave of protests on Tuesday, and it occurred almost concurrently with another on Magadi Road involving Multimedia University students.

For the better part of Tuesday morning, students blocked the road leading up to the Bomas of Kenya in protest of the school’s poor living conditions.

According to Multimedia University students, the school experienced a water shortage for more than a fortnight.

Sections of the students also demanded that the school’s WiFi issue be resolved.

Police officers were sent inside the institution to restore sanity, as the situation threatened to get out of hand.

In what appears to be a worrying trend, Kenyans, particularly the so-called Generation Z, have decided that mass action is the only way to get their grievances heard.

Moi University students recently took to the streets to express their strong opposition to the new University Funding model, claiming that it would disadvantage many of them.
