Jimmy Kibaki Makes A Huge Return Months After Quitting Politics

Former President Mwai Kibaki’s son, Jimmy Kibaki, has returned to politics after a four-month absence to attend to urgent family matters.

Jimmy resigned as the New Democrats’ deputy leader in May 2024, after three years in the position.

In a Gazette notice published on Friday, Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu announced changes to the party’s leadership, appointing Jimmy as Deputy Leader.

Other changes included Daniel Musembi replacing Fredrick Muthangya as Secretary-General, Simon Ngunjiri replacing Roseline Ashepete as Deputy Secretary-General, and Daniel Kipkorir taking over as Deputy Treasurer from Khadija Ahmed.

Jimmy has been perceived as the proverbial heir to his father’s throne since he ruled Kenya for two presidential terms.

Furthermore, the Kibaki family has been involved in politics for a long time, with Jimmy entering the political arena in 1991 by joining the Democratic Party of Kenya.

He then switched sides to the National Alliance Party of Kenya, which later merged with the Liberal Democratic Party to form the National Rainbow Coalition in 2002.

Jimmy was also involved in the formation of the Party of National Unity before eventually joining the New Democratic Party in 2021.

“Over the past 33 years, I have been intimately involved in various political initiatives in this country, including the formation and management of various political parties,” Jimmy stated in a statement announcing his retirement from politics in May 2024.

“At this time in my life, it has become apparent to me that I need to devote all my time to urgent family and business matters that require my full attention,” he added.
