In the previous week, members of the Gran Grif gang stormed through the town of Pont-Sonde in the western Artibonite region early on Thursday, killing at least 70 people, including infants, and forcing almost 6,000 residents to escape.
According to Reuters, Conille’s visit will be to seek security support following one of the Caribbean nation’s bloodiest gang attacks in recent years.
The visit also comes at a time when the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has extended for another year the international security force tasked with assisting local police in combating gangs and maintaining law and order.
