GACHAGUA IMPEACHMENT: Trial’s Big-Name Lawyers Set to Face Off In The Senate [LIST]

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is on the verge of losing his position as second-in-command, and his fate now rests with the Senate.

Despite his best efforts, Gachagua is at the mercy of 47 Senators, who will consider the impeachment resolution against him on Wednesday and Thursday.

His latest setback occurred on Wednesday, October 16, on the opening day of the Senate hearing, when the court denied to impose conservatory orders halting the impeachment proceedings – his second attempt to halt the trial in less than 12 hours.

With Gachagua virtually on borrowed time as Deputy President, a legal battle is expected on Wednesday when the National Assembly’s elite team led by Siaya Governor James Orengo.

The Siaya governor has extensive legal experience. He also has extensive knowledge of the Kenyan constitution and has served in the Senate for two terms.

Orengo is expected to supervise a staff of 14 lawyers. Other renowned legal minds supporting the former Senator include Paul Nyamodi, Eric Gumbo, Moses Kipkemoi, Muthomi Thiankolu, Peter Wanyama, Kenny Kipkoech, Joan Cheruto, Erick Mwingi, Bonface Mawira, Kevine Otieno, Alex Mboya, Kennedy Kyalo, and John Mwangi.

The DP is supported by an equally powerful legal team, led by senior counsel Paul Muite, who considers himself an ‘old-school-lawyer’.

Other senior lawyers supporting Gachagua include Elisha Ongoya, Tom Macharia, Victor Swanya, Ndegwa Njiru, John Njomo, Faith Waigwa, Amos Kisilu, George Wandati, George Sakimpa, Andrew Muge, Eric Naibei, Julia Omwamba, and Willis Echesa.

Gachagua’s defense team is set to round up important witnesses as the battery of lawyers makes a last-ditch effort to demolish the claims against the Deputy President.

There is already speculation that a new deputy president will be named before Kwale’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20. However, the rumour is yet to be confirmed.

Gachagua’s final option in the event of impeachment would be to challenge the impeachment in court.

While declining to halt the Senate trial, Judges Erick Ogolla, Antony Mrima, and Frida Mugambi informed Gachagua’s counsel that the deputy president may fight the Senate’s decision to impeach him later.
