Kalonzo Addresses Claims Of Adani Sponsoring Raila’s Presidency Campaign

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka denied on Tuesday that Adani Group Limited funded former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s campaign for president in 2012 when he ran against former President Mwai Kibaki.

Speaking on Citizen TV, Kalonzo explained that he did not know how or where the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader obtained the money he used to campaign for president.

Kalonzo also indicated that as Odinga’s running mate at the time, he was not responsible for knowing where the presidential candidate obtained campaign financing.

The former vice president also denied that he knew and engaged with the Indian conglomerate, Adani Group Limited.

“I can tell you that I wouldn’t know the presidential candidate’s source of funds because when you have a presidential candidate, how you organise your finances is all left to you. I have no idea who Adani is, I have never met them,” Kalonzo clarified.

The Wiper party leader further linked his predicament to Odinga’s running mate in 2012 and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s current one, claiming that DP Gachagua may not fully understand how President Ruto funded his campaigns in 2022.

According to Kalonzo, a united ticket did not always imply common financing, and what mattered most was the ambitious objective of winning the top seats in government.

“Listen, perhaps it is related to what we are discussing, maybe Gachagua did not know how William Ruto funded his campaign,” Kalonzo stated.

“It is not always that because you are the running mate you bring all your money in one basket, a joint ticket does not mean joint financing.”

Kalonzo stated that he was Raila Odinga’s running mate on multiple occasions and was only focused on electing the former Azimio leader as the next president, never questioning the former Prime Minister about his financial sources.

“My mind was focused on making Raila Odinga the president, and I trusted his ability to fundraise and he found it appropriate to assist his running mate to fund his agent,” the Wiper party leader revealed.

“I am never the type of person, and I think this is where the problem is between Rigathi Gachagua and William Ruto.”

Kalonzo’s clarification comes in the wake of Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo’s inflammatory comments.

In his last press briefing, Maanzo claimed that Raila Odinga’s decision to endorse Adani Group’s projects was motivated by Adani’s purported sponsorship of the former Prime Minister’s candidacy in the previous elections.

Maanzo also claimed that the Indian corporation bribed some of the country’s top political figures in order to gain multibillion-dollar contracts for projects such as renovating the country’s main airport.

“It was one of the companies sponsoring his campaigns to become the president in 2012,” Maanzo alleged.

“It is a bigger plot and that is why there are no procurements. If everything were to be serious then everything would be on the table.”
