Gov’t Splashes Ksh 500 Million To Rescue Moi University

The Moi University community has got a huge financial boost when the National Assembly’s Education Committee Chairperson stated that the Treasury had given money to the university.

Speaking in Parliament on Friday, October 18, Chairperson Julius Melly of the National Assembly’s Education Committee announced that the National Treasury had released Ksh 609 million for the university in October 2024.

“The National Treasury has released Ksh 609 million in October 2024 to Moi University,” the MP said.

To cushion the University from further financial constraints, the MP disclosed that the university will receive an additional Ksh 500 million in November 2024.

“The National Treasury will avail an additional Ksh 500 million to Moi University by November 15th 2024,” the MP continued.

According to Julius Melly, a committee will be formed to ensure that the funds are used wisely.

“A caretaker committee will be constituted to strengthen the management of Moi University during the recovery period,” he communicated.

This move follows a lengthy debate over the situation in the University which forced education to halt for over two weeks after it closed down.

Lecturers at the institution went on strike over unpaid salaries, and casual workers joined them, causing the administration to order students to leave the campus.

The Committee has suggested that the University reopen on November 4 to prevent students from missing any more time that could otherwise be spent studying.

“The committee has recommended that Moi University should reopen on November 4, 2024.”

Before reopening, University workers will be required to sign a return-to-work formula.

“To facilitate the reopening, it is to be noted that staff unions will need to sign a return to work formula to promote consensus and set the stage for reopening and an inter-ministerial committee comprising the Ministry of Education, National Treasury and Ministry of Labour,” Melly clarified.

In addition, the committee has urged the University to enhance revenue from the farm, idle assets, short-term training, consulting, endowment money, and research.
