CS Mutua Announces New Employment Programme After Qatar Job Recruitment Failure
Alfred Mutua, the Labour Cabinet Secretary, recently announced an ambitious initiative aimed at reducing the country’s crippling youth unemployment rate.
On Tuesday, the CS announced a four-point initiative to help youth get high-paying skilled jobs in the country and abroad.
Mutua announced the 1 million Next Level Initiative, which aims to connect a million Kenyans with job, educational, and entrepreneurial opportunities every year.
The Labour CS spoke at the East African Employability Summit at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.
The former governor also unveiled plans to launch a virtual platform dubbed ‘Kenya Skilled Hub’ that will provide youth with essential information on skill development and work-based learning.
Furthermore, the CS emphasized the importance of a national policy linking industry and education.

“This policy is designed to strengthen the alignment between education and the practical demands of the job market,” he stated.
Finally, Mutua released the National Guidelines for Career Guidance and the National Career Guidance Training Manual, which are intended to assist young people in navigating their career paths and selecting jobs in which they can thrive.
The CS’s latest announcement came just two days after he expressed dissatisfaction with the high failure rate during a Qatari company’s recruitment drive for semi-skilled Kenyans in various positions.
Despite 15,000 Kenyans attending interviews in hopes of finding work abroad, only 5% qualified for the 8000 available positions.
According to the Labour CS, the majority of young people applied for jobs claiming to have skills they do not actually have.

During Tuesday’s conference, the Labour CS urged young people to volunteer more in order to improve their job market skills.
“While the government is fully committed to addressing these challenges, I believe young people must also take charge of their futures,” Mutua noted.
“I encourage them to be consistent, persistent, and organized in acquiring the skills that today’s job market demands,” he said.
“To those facing the familiar hurdle of inexperience, I advise considering volunteer roles as a way to build a strong CV. Even the act of finding a job requires dedication; after all, finding work is work itself.”
