‘Drop It Like Hot Potato!” – Kalonzo Warns Cherargei On The Controversial Term Limits Bill

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has told Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei to shelve the term limit extension bill, which he has been promoting.

The senator introduced legislation to increase elected leaders’ terms from five to seven years.

Speaking during a church service at PCEA Umoja on Sunday, Kalonzo said the plan to extend leaders’ term limits has sparked outrage among Kenyans and diverse reactions from a cross-section of leaders across the country.

“Kenya Kwanza should not make the mistake of bringing a constitutional amendment to extend the term limit of leaders from 5 to 7 years,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo went on to say that the bill was a bribe to leaders and that leaders’ terms should be reduced to four years.

“Other countries have presidents who serve for four years, and they have done wonders, so where are you coming from Senator Cherargei?” Kalonzo posed.

“Because I listen to your debates. Cherargei drop that thing like a hot potato if you love your country.”

Kenyans replied to the senator’s suggestion by sending over 240, 000 messages to the Senate’s email system, which crashed.

Insiders in Parliament claimed that no bill, including the recently rejected Finance Bill, 2024, which sparked nationwide protests, had received such widespread popular opposition.

Cherargei told the Senate on October 29 that he had suffered a data privacy violation as a result of a large number of texts and phone calls from Kenyans.

“Senate has so far received 500, 000 emails reacting to my Bill. As of now, 60 percent of Kenyans are supporting my bill and 40 percent are opposing,” Cherargei said.

Currently, the president can serve no more than two five-year terms under the constitution. Senator Cherargei proposes extending the limit to seven years through the Kenya Constitution Amendment Bill, 2024.

“The Bill proposes to amend Article 136 of the constitution, which provides for the election of the President, to increase the term of office of the President from five years to seven years,” the Bill states.

The measure aimed to change sections 101, 177, and 180 of the constitution to prolong the tenure of MPs, Senators, MCAs and Governors to seven years.

It also intends to establish the position of Prime Minister, who will be nominated by the President from among the members of Parliament.
