Embu, Kibabii Universities Tops Ranking While The University of Nairobi At Tenth
The Universities of Embu and Murang’a have surpassed the University of Nairobi (UoN) in the most recent Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2024.
The rating, published by Time Higher Education on Wednesday, November 27, included 129 universities from 22 African countries.
Locally, Embu University emerged as the best institution, followed by Strathmore University, Mt Kenya University, and the United States International University (USIU).
Kibabii University took the fifth position, followed by Murang’a and Kabarak Universities. The University of Nairobi was ranked eighth locally, followed by Kabianga University in ninth and Lukenya University in tenth.
The rankings were based on a variety of metrics, including the institutions’ financial stability.

Institutions that offer a high-quality learning experience were placed first.
Data collected revealed whether the institution has the funds to efficiently deliver instruction, as well as the faculty-to-student ratio, which indicates whether there are enough teaching staff to facilitate interactive learning.
“We also measured the skills-building that institutions provide, and their ability to equip students with the required tools to enter and be successful in the world of work. We also assess the more intangible benefits of education,” noted the publication.
“The metrics are grouped into five pillars: resources and finance; access and fairness; student engagement; ethical leadership (which is new); and Africa impact,” the statement by the Times Higher Education read in part.
The Times Higher Education data team collaborated with university executives from Sub-Saharan Africa to develop the rankings methodology, as part of a project sponsored by a partnership of African and international higher education groups.

Overall, the University of Johannesburg was ranked first with a score of more than 80 points, followed by the University of Pretoria and the Witwatersrand University. All three universities are based in South Africa.
Other universities on the top ten list included the University of Global Health Equity and the University of Rwanda, both of which are based in Rwanda.
The University of Ghana, Makerere University in Uganda, Asheshi University, the University of KwaZulu in South Africa, and SMAD University in Somalia all made the top 10 list.
According to the newspaper, South Africa has the best universities, scoring 65 out of 100, followed by Ghana on 57 points and Kenya on 54 points.
