Another ODM Senator Faults SHA, Warns Kenyans Of More Difficulties
Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka has expressed alarm about the state of Kenya’s healthcare system, which he alleges is deteriorating due to continuous problems with President William Ruto’s health program, the Social Health Authority’s (SHA) e-claims platform.
Onyonka stated his concerns on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, urging Kenyans to brace themselves for a difficult holiday season due to the country’s healthcare system.
In a statement posted to his X account, the senator presented a bleak picture, imploring citizens to pray that they or their loved ones do not become ill during the Christmas season. He referred to the situation within SHA.
The senator condemned the failure of the Ksh104 billion Integrated Healthcare Technology System (IHTS), which was part of a well-known Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP).
“Sadly, Kenyans are going to Christmas festivities in a sick nation. Pray that you or any of your kin doesn’t fall sick because SHA/SHIF is still in limbo,” Onyonka wrote.
The system was designed to simplify and streamline claims management at SHA, but it has reportedly failed to deliver.
This comes only days after Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina highlighted the challenges Kenyans face with SHA when it comes to accessing health treatments.
On Friday, December 6, 2024, Ledama stated via his official X account that he had received numerous messages from residents over the previous eight months, but the one that broke his heart was regarding the new healthcare coverage.
He went on to say that one person phoned him and urged him to help Kenyans fleeing SHA, citing the fact that they had lost their former health insurance coverage through the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
“In the past 8 months, I have received very many messages from citizens but the saddest of all is this one ‘Senator I miss NHIF, please help us’,” he wrote.

This came after President William Ruto guaranteed Kenyans that under his leadership, SHA will be free of corruption, establishing the groundwork for a transformational and reliable healthcare system.
Ruto emphasized the government’s resolve to eradicate the improved health coverage of corruption, a problem that previously plagued the National Hospital Insurance Fund.
On Thursday, the Head of State spoke at the Kilifi International Investment Conference in Vipingo.
“The challenges of fraud and corruption that crippled the NHIF will never be part of our universal healthcare plan as long as I am in charge,” Ruto declared, addressing both the gathering of local and international investors and officials present at the event.
