Matiang’i’s 2027 Presidential Plans Receive Boost As UPA Endorses Candidature
A major organ of the United Progressive Alliance Party (UPA) has endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as the party’s presidential candidate for 2027.
The former strong CS under Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration is alleged to have quietly flown into Kenya a few days ago from the United States, where he has been since 2022.
On Wednesday, the UPA’s National Executive Committee met in Nyamira and overwhelmingly decided to support Matiang’i for president in 2027.
On Wednesday, UPA Secretary General Jacob Bagaka announced that the party’s NEC has approved a proposal to field Matiang’i as its presidential candidate in 2027.

“We don’t have any fear of contradiction that Dr Matiang’i’s popularity in the country is indisputable and the decision of the party to prepare for his candidacy is a gesture that has been appreciated from across the country,” Bagaka said.
Bagaka stated that the party will launch a strong push to popularize the outfit outside of the Gusii region as a potential vehicle for Matiang’i in the 2027 presidential election.
“We are ready to hit the ground running to position UPA as a formidable force.”
Nyamira Governor Amoss Nyaribo, the UPA leader, stated that the party was developing rapidly ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Our party is already national and we shall triple campaigns aimed at making it more vibrant through membership,” Nyaribo said.
Nyaribo stated that efforts are being made to unite the UPA with other like-minded Gusii-based parties in order to broaden the region’s negotiating leverage ahead of the 2027 elections.
“UPA leadership is engaged in meetings with other parties from Gusii to forge a formidable force to propel Matiang’i to the presidency,” Nyaribo said after the UPA NEC meeting.

Matiang’i was one of the founding members of UPA in the run-up to the 2022 elections when he was tipped as Uhuru’s potential successor.
The previously powerful interior secretary would, however, support Azimio La Umoja’s Raila Odinga, who lost to President William Ruto.
Following the 2022 elections, the UPA retained one governor, one MP, and 18 MCAs across the country.
While Matiang’i has not openly proclaimed his presidential ambitions, there are indications that he intends to challenge President Ruto in 2027.
