Over 3,000 Irate Residents Storm Police Station, Injuring Officers And Kill Murder Suspect

Police officers in Tinderet Sub County, Nandi County, had a difficult day on Thursday when thousands of enraged villagers assaulted a police station in search of a murder suspect imprisoned at Chemase Police Station.

The enraged neighbors, armed with crude weapons, assaulted the station, injuring officers who attempted to repel them.

After overwhelming the cops, the enraged mob set fire to a police vehicle and looted property.

Residents allegedly stormed the police station after authorities detained a suspect in connection with the gruesome murder of a 38-year-old man, whose body was discovered disfigured.

Residents overpowered the police and were able to extract the offender, who was then stoned to death and burned.

“Today at around 1330hrs irate members of the public totalling about 3000 in number stormed Chemase Police Post and overpowered the police who were manning the report office and the premises,” a police report read.

“They maliciously damaged the down part of the station building and burnt down the police vehicle, model Ford ranger GKB127Y. After rescuing the suspect they stoned him to death and burned his dead body,” it added.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the residents pleaded with the officers to release the suspect, but the officers refused, citing their obligation to obey the law.

Tinderet Police Commander Johnson Mwariga claimed that the suspect confessed to the crime and even led investigators to the location where the victim’s head and other body parts were allegedly kept.

The National Police Service (NPS)’s senior leadership denounced the incident and urged the people not to intervene.

“Following the attack at the Chemase Police Post, we are appealing to the members of the public to refrain from taking the law in their hands and let the law take its cause once a suspect has been arrested,” NPS Spokesperson Resila Onyango, shared in a statement.

Incidents of irritated members of the public storming police stations have increased in the recent past.

On December 17, last year, villagers of Kaptagat in Elgeyo Marakwet stormed the Kaptagat Police Station after discovering the bones of slain domestic animals that had allegedly been stolen by some officers there.
