‘SHA Is Efficient!’ – Ruto’s Chief Advisor Claims

Moses Kuria, President William Ruto’s chief economic counselor, has stated that the Social Health Authority (SHA) is not discriminatory and is equally efficient in private and public institutions.

Speaking on Spice FM on Monday, Kuria stated that the government is aiming to ensure that Kenyans can easily access health care from both state-owned and private facilities.

“The thing about those level 2, 3, 4 and level 5 hospitals is that they are not the only ones under SHA. You get treated in a private hospital in exactly the same way you will be treated in a public hospital. SHA does not discriminate,” he said.

Kuria stated that, in addition to benefiting patients, this has served as a wake-up call to governors to improve public hospitals under their supervision.

He also stated that the “sibling competition” between private and public facilities will result in mutual improvement, leading to a “self-correcting system”.

Kuria commented on the SHA system, saying that the numbers at level 5 and level 6 facilities, like Kenyatta National Hospital, are overwhelming, causing the issue.

He claimed that a high volume of users attempting to access the system caused a misalignment of a component of equipment known as the providers portal.

He confidently said that no patients are being turned away at public hospitals and that the concerns with system downtime have been resolved.

He asked Kenyans to SMS him their information and health facilities in case they were turned away.

Kuria noted that the SHA implementation is far from complete, pointing out that the rollout of such a system is unique.

“We are working on progress. I am not claiming perfection. But what I am claiming is that every single problem that happens becomes an opportunity for us to fix the system,” Kuria said.
