Moses Kuria Says SHA Registration Refusal Is Stupidity
Moses Kuria, a senior government economic advisor, has spoken out against a group of Kenyans who reject the Social Health Authority (SHA).
Kuria argued that God could send them away if they died without health insurance.
Speaking in Mombasa County on Thursday, January 23, 2025, Kuria urged locals to sign up for the Kenya-Kwanza administration’s proposed health insurance.
“Wakikataa, chukueni. Wengine wanasema ati hawatajiandikisha na SHA; ati Ruto must go.
“Mimi nawaambia: Ndio ata uweze kuona Ruto akienda, si ujiandikishe na SHA uwe na afya mzuri. Ukisema Ruto must go na hauko ndani ya SHA, ukifa si ata Mungu atakukataa?” Kuria stated.

The Ministry of Health has been plagued by ongoing problems in the transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) on October 1, 2024, sparking widespread public outrage across the country.
However, the Ministry has maintained that the health system’s regular instabilities will be a thing of the past once backup solutions are implemented.
According to the latest Ministry of Health figures, 18.2 million Kenyans have already registered with the Social Health Authority.
The Ministry further stated that about 4.6 million Kenyans whose information has been moved from the NHIF should update their information on SHA.
They also indicated that they will implement the Health Information Exchange system in December 2024, adding that patient data will be shared seamlessly among hospitals.

“We stress the critical need for principal beneficiaries to register their dependents to ensure full family coverage under SHA,” the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.
“Efforts are being intensified through CHPs and community engagement programs to raise awareness and encourage timely action.
The Ministry also stated that more than half of the country’s health institutions have adopted SHA, with a total of 8,722 facilities.
The law mandates everyone in the country to register for SHA, including foreign residents who remain for more than 12 months.
