Kiambu County Plans To Build Swimming Pools For Pre-Primary Schools
Kiambu County has announced intentions to build swimming pools at Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) schools.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi unveiled the idea in a statement posted on Friday, January 24, but did not specify the cost.
According to Wamatangi, pools would be built in all zones. Kiambu County is organized administratively into 15 sub-counties, 33 divisions, 96 locations, and 245 sub-locations.
“I will classify the ECDE centres under the county government into zones and build a swimming pool for every zone,” stated Wamatangi.
“Even the children in the public ECDEs will enjoy such amenities that were formerly a preserve of the private academies.”

The county has 524 public ECDE centers and is modernising its school infrastructure.
According to our analysis, the county might spend about Ksh100 million or more on the project if it decides to build commercial-size pools.
According to online estimates, the cost of creating a normal 12-meter by 6-meter pool ranges from Ksh2.6 million to Ksh2.8 million.
Building commercial pools, such as those spanning 25 meters by 10 meters, can cost between Ksh5 million and Ksh20 million, depending on size and complexity.

Last year, Wamatangi declared that parents of ECDE students would no longer be required to purchase exercise books and school clothes for their children since the county government would give them.
Additionally, the county has created a feeding program that serves oatmeal every day, with eggs available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, as well as milk.
In 2014, Kiambu County had 72,061 children enrolled in ECDE facilities. At the time, there were 26,503 children registered in the baby class, 35,648 in the nursery, and 36,910 in pre-unit.
The rationale for the installation of swimming pools is expected to elicit conflicting views from a country grappling with high unemployment, water scarcity, and starvation.
