AVIATION DISASTERS 2025: SIX Tragic Plane Crashes In January

January 2025 has proven to be a devastating month for aviation, with at least six fatal crashes worldwide, killing over 100 people.

Among these tragedies, two incidents occurred in Kenya, underscoring the continued dangers faced by aviation professionals and passengers worldwide.

United States – January 30, 2025

The most recent of these incidents took place on January 30, 2025, when a midair collision between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet near Washington, D.C, resulted in the deaths of all 67 people aboard.

The American Airlines plane, attempting to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport, crashed with the military helicopter, dropping both aircraft into the freezing Potomac River.

The crash occurred in some of the world’s most closely monitored airspace, prompting an urgent change from rescue to recovery efforts.

Kenya – January 30, 2025

Earlier that day, a Cessna 185, registration 5Y-BVL, crashed at Kedong Ranch near Naivasha on Thursday evening, January 30, 2025, at approximately 5:14 p.m.

The plane, which took off from Wilson Airport in Nairobi on its way to Mbaruk, was carrying two people, both of whom died.

A member of the public reported the collision to police, and an inquiry is currently underway.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has stated that it is cooperating with emergency responders, local security officers, and the Air Accident Investigation Department (MID) to obtain additional information.

Venezuela – January 29, 2025

Meanwhile, on January 29, another Cessna S550 Citation business jet crashed shortly after taking off from Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base in Caracas, Venezuela.

Unfortunately, all three crew members aboard were killed.

Three military men, Captain Lieutenant Colonel Henner Perozo, Co-pilot First Lieutenant José Almazan, and Chief Engineer Second Sergeant Major Eduardo Rodríguez, were killed.

South Sudan – January 29, 2025

A catastrophic accident happened in South Sudan on January 29, when a Beechcraft 1900D carrying oil workers from Rubkona County’s Unity oilfields crashed shortly after departure.

At least 19 people died, including two Chinese nationals.

The GPOC oil company had rented the aircraft, which was carrying 21 people when it crashed.

Two survivors, one South Sudanese and one Indian are critically ill and have been hospitalized.

South Korea – January 28, 2025

On January 28, a fire broke out aboard an Air Busan Airbus A321 at Busan Gimhae International Airport in South Korea.

The fire broke out in the aircraft’s tail area when it was at the gate, forcing all 170 passengers and six staff members to evacuate.

While there were two reported injuries, it is possible that the aircraft, destined for Hong Kong, was a total loss.

This incident happened about a month after another terrible crash in December 2024, when 179 people died in a high-profile Jeju Air catastrophe.

Brazil – January 9, 2025

The first catastrophe of the month occurred on January 9, when a Cessna 525 Citation business aircraft exploded on a beach in Brazil.
