Musk’s DOGE Team Member Resigns Over Complaints Of Racist Posts

A young member of Elon Musk’s newly founded Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) unit quit after being linked to a racist social media account.

According to media sources, Marko Elez, 25, a former employee of Musk’s SpaceX, was linked to a now-defunct social media account that espoused racism and eugenics.

On Friday, the White House acknowledged that Elez had resigned, but did not explain why.

Musk confirmed the departure by running a poll on X, his social media site.

He asked followers if he should reinstate the Doge employee who made “inappropriate statements via a now-deleted pseudonym.”

“Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool,” read one post from the account in July.

The account linked to Elez—first revealed by the Wall Street Journal—posted a number of heated comments, which the BBC confirmed as legitimate.

“You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity,” the account wrote in September.

“Normalise Indian hate,” another post that month said.

The posts have subsequently been deleted.

As of Friday morning, more than 385,000 people appeared to have voted in Musk’s poll on re-hiring Elez, despite the fact that he was not mentioned specifically. So far, 78% have voted for Elez’s return.

Responding to one person who suggested Musk talk to Elez “about the racist stuff.” Not cool,” the millionaire responded, “True.”

Elez’s departure comes as Doge, Trump’s cost-cutting advisory group that has risen as a prominent force in his second term faces more scrutiny.

Musk and his team have led an unprecedented effort to reduce the size of the federal government.

On Thursday, a US judge blocked one of such schemes, suspending a proposal to offer incentives to millions of government employees to voluntarily quit this month.

Musk has also supported efforts to dissolve USAID, the government organization in charge of overseas development.

All but a few key employees—from a workforce of roughly 10,000 people—are scheduled to be placed on administrative leave at midnight on Friday, including thousands stationed overseas.
