MTRH Patient Dies In Suspected Suicide In Isolated Ward

Detectives are looking into an incident in which a patient was discovered dead following a suspected suicide in an isolated ward at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.

Enock Kisuru, 48, was discovered hanging on a window grill following a suspected suicide on Saturday afternoon, February 15.

CEO Dr Phillip Kirwa acknowledged the event, saying the mental ward patient had become hostile and had been put up in a secure room alone.

He explained that such violent individuals are typically segregated from others and placed in a secure room to prevent them from causing harm to others.

“He used his clothes to commit suicide in the room where he was alone,” said Kirwa.

He stated that the case had been reported to both the police and the family.

“The family members are expected today (Monday) at MTRH and police are also handling the matter,” said Dr Kirwa.

Kirwa, who spoke with the Star over the phone, said the hospital would release a statement on the subject.

A report on the event was also filed at Naiberi Police Station.

The report was made by Inspector of Police Philemon Sirwa, who oversees MTRH’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU).

“It was established from the nurse of the said ward that the deceased became violent to other mental patients and was taken to a secure room within the male ward at 1230hrs,” the OB report stated.

“Later at 1345hrs when they went to check on him they found him hanging on the window grill using his clothes [patient’s mental uniform].”

Police were called to the location for processing. Police stated they are looking into the incident.

The incident occurred during an investigation into the murder of a patient at the Kenyatta National Hospital ward.

Police claimed they had examined several people regarding the death of the patient, whose throat was slashed by an unknown assailant on February 7.

There have been no arrests in connection with the murder of Geoffrey Kinyua, who was suffering from brain problems.

The occurrences call into question the overall security of patients at hospitals.
